The National Association for Gambling Studies (NAGS) 2024 Conference, held at Sea World Gold Coast, brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and researchers to explore new advancements in gambling harm prevention. As a global leader in safer gambling research and solutions, Focal Research Consultants was proud to play a prominent role in this year’s program, sharing valuable insights and practical strategies for promoting responsible gambling.

Engaging Players: Pre-Conference Workshop

On November 20th, Jay Robinson delivered a highly interactive workshop focused on preventing and mitigating gambling harm in venues. The session highlighted innovative strategies for engaging with players, even in the absence of visible harm indicators. By offering practical tools and approaches, Jay emphasized the importance of early intervention to create safer gambling environments.

Presentations: Research-Driven Approaches to Safer Gambling

On November 21st, Dr. Tony Schellinck and Dr. Melissa Salmon, presented Focal’s latest research findings to an engaged audience:

Dr. Tony Schellinck shared insights into how real-world player data can be leveraged to support regulatory oversight, providing operators and policymakers with actionable guidance for improving gambling harm prevention measures.
Dr. Melissa Salmon presented on continuous play and player break behaviors, addressing their implications for safer gambling practices. Melissa reflected: “This research highlights key behaviors that can inform safer gambling policies and interventions. We’re excited to build on these findings and share future results with a wider audience.”

Panel Discussion: From Research to Policy

Focal’s Sonja Bauer and Linda Woo participated in the panel discussion, From Paper to Policy: Navigating the Challenges of Translating Research into Policy and Practice. Alongside Monique Bielanowski and Dan Nipperess, the panel explored the challenges and opportunities in bridging research and policy to achieve lasting impact. Attendees gained valuable insights into the regulatory, practical, and collaborative efforts required to translate evidence into actionable outcomes.

Panel Discussion: Reflecting on 25 Years of Progress

Sonja and Linda also participated in the plenary discussion, “25 Years since the First Australian Productivity Commission Report.” This panel brought together experts to reflect on the successes and shortcomings of Australia’s gambling policies over the past 25 years. The discussion explored what has been done well, what remains unaddressed, and the steps needed to tackle critical challenges in the industry.
