Focal to Unveil New Research on Time Thresholds at Premier Australian Safer Gambling Conference

Halifax, NS: November 13th, 2024

Focal Research Consultants announced today that several members of the Focal team will present at this year’s National Association for Gambling Studies conference, November 20th-22nd at Sea World Gold Coast.

CEO, Dr. Tony Schellinck, will present “Unlocking the Full Potential of Real-World Player Data for Regulatory Oversight” and Applied Research Lead, Dr. Melissa Salmon, will present “Understanding Continuous Play: Who Plays Longer Sessions and Why Do They Take Fewer Breaks?”

Schellinck said, “Our latest research explores the effectiveness of time-based thresholds for identifying and supporting those experiencing gambling-related harm. In the first session, Melissa will present research using real-world behavioural data that offers new evidence to challenge existing research on time thresholds and best practices for player protection. My second session will focus on how player data can be harnessed to make evidence-informed decisions, taking the guesswork out of data provision requirements to meet compliance requirements.”

Chief Stakeholder Relations Officer, Jay Robinson will also be conducting a pre-conference workshop on “Preventing and Mitigating Gambling Harm in Venues.” “This is for those concerned about preventing harms through interactions with players in-venue who may not be showing visible signs of harm. I will also discuss the applied insights and practical approaches regulators and operators will want to implement,” said Robinson.

In addition, Focal Associates Sonja Bauer and Linda Woo will be joining a panel on, “From Paper to Policy: Navigating the Challenges of Translating Research into Policy and Practice”

The group will share insights into the practical, regulatory and policy considerations that can lead to research that has a lasting impact toward preventing and reducing gambling harm.
